Programme of Summer 2024 Classes

All classes take place at Risley Village Memorial Hall, Derby Rd, Risley, DE72 3SS, from 10am-4pm.

Cost £50 per class. NB some classes offer materials for a reasonable cost on the day. 

There is ample parking. Please contact each tutor for additional details and booking as below.

Light refreshments will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.


In addition we will be presenting our Summer Textile Open Day on Saturday 3rd August.

1. Tuesday 30th  July – Tutor- Gillian Choo –‘Crochet Improver’s Class’

This class is suitable for anyone who can make a basic granny square. Techniques will include corner to corner crochet, edgings, joining techniques (decorative and invisible), cords, bunting, crocheted flowers and variations on granny squares. Participants will be asked to make some small granny squares in advance (instructions provided) for practising edgings and joining techniques.

2. Tuesday 30th July -Tutor- Keta Jones- ‘Paper Piecing Class’. Create a paper pieced patchwork block approximately 28cm square, based on an Islamic tile design. This involves covering a provided card template with fabric and assembling together using whip stitch. Your pieced block could form the inspiration for a cushion, bag or larger quilt.

3. Wednesday 31st July- Tutor- Kate Follows- ‘Fish in a Pond’

We will work through some of the techniques used to create my piece from our recent Exhibition, including, painting and embellishing our little fishes, making waves using bias fabric strips and making a base of shimmering water using layered sheer and metallic fabrics with beads and stitching.

All of these techniques are transferable into other themes and allow for further development of your own. All techniques can be completed by hand on the day to create a delightful piece to frame.

4. Wednesday 31st July – Tutor- Sarah Cooke – ‘Weave a Notebook Cover’

Using conventional yarn and recycled materials such as fabric off-cuts, plastic packaging and ribbons, you can learn how to weave a beautiful cover for a notebook or diary. These make a lovely gift for someone special! All materials and equipment.

5. Friday 2nd August – Tutor Jane Marrows- ‘Silk Paper Making’

Learn the exciting technique of making beautiful surfaces to stitch,  from colourful loose silk fibres. We will include a range of textural elements, including other fibres, glitter strands, silk flowers, other threads and small snippets of sheer fabrics. Embellish with hand or machine stitch. Several pieces can be made on the day. Strong and durable, your paper can be used for a variety of exciting projects, e.g. book covers and small bags. Materials for the day will be available at £8 per person . 

NB The use of your sewing machine is optional.

6. Friday 2nd August – Tutor – Tony Toon – ‘A Golden Orfe’

Create a stunning small piece to frame, 4 x 6 inches approx, as an introduction to the traditional techniques of gold work. Your piece will be worked in a frame or hoop. Some materials will be provided free of charge but there will be a small cost for ‘purl purl’ on the day. Full materials list from tutor on booking
