Courses marked with a * require a sewing machine [sometimes optional]

Monday 23rd July 2018

     a. 1     Jelly Roll Bargello*

Have you heard of a Bargello Quilt?  Waves, peaks, curves, move across a Bargello quilt in colourful patterns.  It looks very complicated but it is surprisingly easy to make, if you can sew a straight seam, you can do this. We will use a pre-cut Jelly Roll or fabric from your stash to make this exciting lap quilt with ease!  Finished size with borders approx. 36” x 48”.  Straight machine sewing, but some experience with a rotary cutter & rulers will be useful.

                 Tutor:  Gilli Theokritoff

b. 2     Winged Wonders

Up-cycle your fabric & paper scraps to form fantasy insects. Taking inspiration from a selection of samples on the day & working with a variety of patterns, you will stitch, glue, bond, bead & wax your materials to create unique butterflies & moths to frame.

Tutor:  Jane Marrows

Tuesday 24th July 2018

a. 3     Colourful Crazy Collage

Using wool felts, patterned fabrics, printed images & text, with the occasional bit of block printing, we will create a contemporary collage, then embellish with stitch, lace, ribbons & buttons to form a gorgeous textural panel, suitable to be mounted, framed, or as a panel in a bag or cushion.

Hand stitching, suitable for all abilities.

Tutor:  Gilli Theokritoff

b. 4     Foxy

Using felted wool & tweed fabrics, so lovely to stitch into, sew a small 9x9inch cushion featuring a charming fox motif.  Add a few flowers & a little name tag. An easy project with a good introduction to hand embroidery .

            Tutor:  Janet Humphrey

Wednesday 25th July  2018

a. 5     Little Miss Muffet Sat on a Tuffet*

You have probably seen these footstools sold as kits or highly priced workshops. Here is your chance to make a Tuffet from just five Fat Quarters or a Jelly Roll, in one day. Kits will include foam, wadding, board, centre button & legs at a very reasonable £65, paid to the tutor on the day. No complicated cutting & sewing, just straight seams . No upholstery experienced needed, you will go home with a fabulous piece of furniture by the end of the workshop!  We will be using upholstery equipment such as staple guns, so you need strong hands.

Sewing machine required.  Suitable for abilities.

Tutor:  Gilli Theokritoff

b. 6     Cathedral Window Patchwork*

Learn the method of making a cathedral window block by machine. Machining speeds up the  process, but there is still a lot of hand stitching.  After making a small unit of cathedral window based on a square, you can then make a small item such as a specs case, Christmas tree decoration, pin cushion, or start a cushion cover. Another option is to try a different shaped cathedral window such as a rectangle. There will also be ideas for decorative finishes.  Templates will be supplied.

          Tutor:  Greta Fitchett

Thursday 26th July 2018

a. 7     Floribunda*

Create this bright & beautiful wet-felted cushion cover from natural wool & silk fibres. You will make a selection of pre-felts on the day & collage them together to form a delightful flower, using on-lay techniques. You may finish your piece with hand or machine stitch & beading.

Tutor:  Jane Marrows

b. 8     Ravishing Rosettes

You may be aware of the popularity of English Paper Piecing [EPP], which has come a long way from the paper & fabric hexagons of our childhoods.  Lots of modern methods to speed up the

process, really interesting fabrics & colours, some “fussy cutting” & interesting arrangements make this an absorbing, exciting & easy project.  Using pre-cut paper templates we will create fabulous patterned circles which can be appliqued onto a background or incorporated into quilts & other projects.  Hand stitching, suitable for all abilities.

Tutor:  Gilli Theokritoff

Wednesday 1st August 2018

a. 9     Machine Stitched Textures*

The morning will be spent creating a “new” fabric. Torn fabric & lace are attached to a background fabric with free machine embroidery. More decoration is then added with set machine patterns, couching & hand stitching. During the afternoon the embroidered fabric will be used on a small project. It works well as both applique & patchwork. There is a choice of project ideas including applique on a quilted book wrap, feature squares in cathedral window units, a small padded heart shape, & as a foundation for Inchies.

Instructions and templates will be available for all of the ideas.

Tutor  Greta Fitchett

A simple” concertina folded “ book made from cotton rag paper (khadi) with a garden theme featuring tiny 3D wired birds & flowers. Using fabric scraps, paper ephemera, lace, ribbons etc. Then embellish with hand embroidery. Bring paint & related printing blocks too for further decoration.

It is this careful preparation of the stitched pieces of fabric which create the range of patterns. The actual dyeing process does not take long.  Drying, washing & finishing advice will be given at the end of the day. Those taking part can bring their own natural fabrics & threads to use, or some will be available to buy on the day.
